  2. English Department Mission The Bachelor of Arts program in English is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in literature and language. The program aims to create majors with marketable literacy abilities useful in pursuing professional careers and graduate education. A degree in English aims to develop: • Writing and Reading Ability • Research Skills • Critical Thinking Skills • Rhetorical Ability • Engagement with Diverse Perspectives • Lifelong Learning

English Program Features To help students develop powerful literacy skills, the English program features: • Intensive writing practice • Guided major advisement • A combination of required and elective course work • Both traditional and non-traditional texts (from novels and poems to films, graphic novels, web sites, and podcasts) • Both creative and analytic writing • Both curricular and extra-curricular activities • Accommodation of student interests • 30 hours free electives to allow for a minor or double major

Opportunities for Professionalization • Internships – Opportunity for juniors and seniors to gain professional writing experience with real businesses – IUP English majors have interned with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Marvel Comics, local Fox News, local law firms and libraries, and many other organizations – Can be done for 3-12 credits; may optionally be done for pay – English Internship Coordinator: Dr. Heather Powers (hjh@iup.edu) • IUP Undergraduate Scholars Forum – Opportunity to present a paper you have written for an English class • EAPSU Pennsylvania State English Undergraduate Conference – Opportunity to present a paper you have written for an English class – Chance to network with other English majors from throughout Pennsylvania

Annual Spring Writing Contest • The English Department holds a writing contest each spring • Awards are given in a variety of categories including: • Poetry • Fiction • Critical Essays • Educational Lesson Plans • All students are eligible to submit to any or all of the categories • Writing Contest Coordinator: Dr. Reena Dube (reena.dube@iup.edu)

Award Opportunities • The English Department holds an awards ceremony each spring • Awards are given to recognize outstanding English majors (with 3.5 or better GPAs) • Awards are also given to officers of student English organizations and writing contest winners • Students and their parents are invited to attend • Refreshments are served at this formal event • English Awards Ceremony Coordinators: Dr. Heather Powers (hjh@iup.edu), Dr. Jo-Anne Kerr (j-a.kerr@iup.edu), and Dr. Jean Nienkamp (nienkamp@iup.edu)

  16. English Program Outcomes The skills students acquire from an English major are marketable in such areas as business, government service, professional and graduate schools, and publishing. Majoring in English at IUP can lead to: • A wide variety of career options after graduation: IUP English majors have gotten jobs with the U.S. Federal government, web publishing companies, insurance companies. • Matriculation to well regarded graduate programs: IUP students have gone on to graduate program such as Georgetown, John Hopkins, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota. • Advance rapidly in careers based in strong communication skills: Managers at Shared Medical Systems in Philadelphia are former IUP English majors • An appreciation for language, literature, and the power of written and oral persuasion • Bonus: Dorm rooms and apartments crammed with books and papers!

Graduate Study in English For those who finish an undergrad degree in English and wish to pursue graduate study, we offer: • Assistance in preparing graduate school applications • Master of Arts in Composition and Literature • Masters of Arts in Literature • Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) • Ph.D. in Composition and TESOL • Ph.D. in Literature and Criticism

SHHHHH!: Secret Tip for IUP Success • IUP is a Doctoral/Research University • That means IUP faculty regularly publish scholarly articles • So look them up through IUP library or at http://www.googlescholar.com • Read some of your professors’ works and you’ll get an insight into how they think • Then quote your professor in your next course paper to earn mega brownie points
