Kansas’ Changing Population • In 2000—2,500,000 people in KS • Johnson County=fastest growing county • KC, Topeka, Lawrence and Wichita • Less than 1% of US population lives in KS • 14th largest state in country in size • 32nd largest state in country in population • 2 Senators, 4 House of Representatives
Rural Depopulation • Losing population in countryside • Traditionally based on agriculture • Technology allows fewer people to do work • Small towns rely on farmers • Fewer farmers=less money to spend in small towns=businesses shutting down=Town shutting down
Gove, KS • County seat of Gove County • Capital of the county • County Government services • Hotels, banks, attorneys, barbers, retail stores, gas stations, newspaper • Population continuously declines
Possible Solutions to Rural Depopulation • Buffalo Commons—federal government purchase land and turn the region back to wildlife like it was before • Diversify rural economy • Business incentives to move to rural areas • Agri-Tourism • Allow tourists to experience life on the farm • Selling straight to the consumer • Make more $$, attracting more to rural areas
