About HSF • Founded in 1975, HSF's vision is to strengthen the country by advancing college education among Hispanic Americans. • HSF provides the Latino community more college scholarships and educational outreach support than any other organization in the country. • During the 2007-2008 academic year, HSF awarded nearly 4,100 scholarships exceeding $26.6 million. • In its 33-year history, HSF has awarded more than 86,000 scholarships worth more than $250 million to Latinos for college.

About GMS • The Gates Millennium Scholars Program (GMS) is funded by a $1 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and was established in 1999. • The goal of GMS is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for thousands of outstanding students with significant financial need to reach their fullest potential. • The program has funded more than 12,000 Gates Millennium scholars with over $438 million for college since its inception.

  4. About the GMS Program The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) is the administratorof the GMS initiative and has partnered with the following organizations: - American Indian Graduate Center Scholars - Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund - Hispanic Scholarship Fund

Be of Hispanic heritage Be a U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (cumulative) Must apply for federal financial aid using the FAFSA All levels eligible to apply (HS Senior-Grad School) No financial need requirement Deadline to apply: December 15, 2009 African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American; Citizen, legal permanent resident of the United States; Cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (un-weighted) or earned a GED; Must be a first time entering freshman Meet the federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria Applications available August-January Eligibility Requirements

  6. What is the GMS Award? The GMS Scholarship Award Provides: • Support for the cost of education by covering unmet need and self-help; • Renewable awards for Gates Scholars maintaining satisfactory academic progress (Up to 5 Years of Undergraduate Study); • Graduate School fellowships for continuing Gates Scholars in the areas of computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health and the sciences; • Leadership development programs

GMS Nomination Process 3 People Need to Complete the Application 1) The student to complete a comprehensive Nominee Personal Information Form 2) An educator who is familiar with the student’s academic background to complete the Nominator Form 3) A community member or individual who is aware of the student’s community service and leadership activities to complete the Recommender Form; Nominator & Recommender may be the same person

GMS Scholarship Timeline • From August through mid January • All online applications are processed when submitted • All applications mailed by the deadline are scanned and loaded into the Nomination database • During the month of February • Independent readers completing an individualized reading and scoring assessment of each eligible Nominee in three major areas: academic achievement, community service, and leadership potential • From March through early April • Every student that applied for the GMS scholarship is notified of their status (Non-Select or Finalist) • Finalist application information is verified including GPA, citizenship status, and federal Pell grant eligibility • 1,000 Gates Scholars are selected and notified

GMS Nomination Questions 1) Discuss the subjects in which you excel or have excelled. 2) Discuss the subjects in which you had difficulty. 3) Briefly describe a situation in which you felt that you or others were treated unfairly or were not given an opportunity you felt you deserved. 4) Discuss your short and long-term goals. 5) Discuss a leadership experience you have had in any area of your life: school, work, athletics, family, church, community, etc.

GMS Nomination Questions 6) Discuss your involvement in and contributions to a community near your home, school or elsewhere. 7) Other than through classes in school, in what areas (non-academic or academic) have you acquired knowledge or skills? 8) Is there anything else you would like to tell us about that may help us evaluate your nomination, i.e. personal characteristics, obstacles you have overcome, etc.? (9) ONLY for Nominees who graduated from high school or earned their GED more than one year ago: Describe those activities in which you have participated since completing high school (e.g. community service, leadership, employment) that you believe qualify you for this scholarship.

How to Apply • Visit WWW.HSF.NET • Click on “Apply Online Now!” • Click “Register Now” and fill out Registration Information page • Check email for message from scholarshipdepartment@hsf.net • Return to WWW.HSF.NET to fill out the Universal Application • Complete the HSF General Application and co-branded applications, if offered

  12. Academic Profile Academic and Personal Information • Work experience and volunteer activities • Degree(s) earned • Current and intended institution • Current and intended major(s) • GPA and number of units completed • Recommender’s name, email address and relationship to the student

  13. HSF General Application Most scholarship applicants must fill out the General Application • Applicants fill out 3 essay questions • Responses must be under 600 words • Topics include “My Hispanic Heritage,” “Contributing to my Community,” & “Overcoming an Academic Challenge”

  14. Recommendation • After the student submits their Universal Application, the recommender is contacted by HSF via email. • Recommender must evaluate the student in 5 areas, state the nature of their relationship, and give an overall recommendation for the student. • Recommendation must be submitted electronically by the posted deadline (may differ from application deadline).

  15. Required Documents POSTMARKED BY THE LISTED DEADLINE: • Official transcript • Proof of residency (for permanent residents) AFTER COMPLETING APPLICATION: • Student Aid Report (SAR) From 2010 FAFSA AFTER BEING SELECTED: • Enrollment Verification Form

  16. Summary • HSF Applications for the 2010-2011 academic year will be available from September 1, 2009 – December 15, 2009. • GMS Applications for the 2010-2011 academic year will be available August 1, 2009 – January 2010. WWW.GMSP.ORG WWW.HSF.NET
