  4. Just What Size Is an Atom? Cut 31 H Ca He Atoms !!! Cl C Na O N 0.00013 micron

  5. Name: Proton Description: Positive Favorite Activity: Hanging out in the Nucleus Arcade Name: Neutron Description: Neutral Favorite Activity: Hanging out in the Nucleus Arcade The Atomic Family Story In the center of Matterville, there is a place called the Nucleus Arcade, where two members of the Atoms Family like to hang out. Perky Patty Proton, like her sisters, is always has huge smile and eyes that sparkle (+). Patty is always happy and has a very positive personality. Nerdy Nelda Neutron is large like Patty, but she has a boring, flat mouth and eyes with zero expression (o). Her family is very neutral about everything. Patty, Nelda, and their sisters spend all their time at the arcade.

  6. Name: Electron Description: Negative Favorite Activity: Racing around the arcade (nucleus) Around the Nucleus Arcade, you will find a series of roadways that are used by another member of the Atomic Family, Enraged Elliott Electron. Elliott races madly around the Arcade on his bright red chrome-plated Harley-Davidson. He rides so fast that no one can be sure where he is at any time. Elliott is much smaller than Patty and Nelda and he is always angry because these bigger relatives will not let him in the Arcade. He has a frown on his face, eyes that are squinted with anger, and a very negative (-) attitude.

  7. Energy Superhighway Can hold 18 electrons Energy Freeway Can hold 8 electrons Nucleus ArcadeContains protons & neutrons Energy Street Can hold 2 electrons The first energy street can only hold only two Electron brothers. The second energy street, called the Energy Freeway, can hold 8 brothers. The third energy street, called the Energy Superhighway, can hold 18 of the brothers. Matterville

  8. Atoms are the basic units of matter

  9. The three parts of an atom are • protons • neutrons • electrons proton + neutron 0 electron -

  10. The Periodic Table lists out ALL of the atoms that we know exist in the world! The Periodic Table is a chart that organizes the atoms.

  11. continued... • Atoms of the same element are exactly alike. H H

  12. continued... • Atoms of differentelements are different. O H

  13. We can use the Periodic Table to predict the number of protons, electrons and neutrons that will be in an atom.

  14. There are three basic parts of each entry in the periodic table: the atomic number, symbol name and atom name (element’s name). Atom Name Silicon

  15. The atomic number tells you how many protons and electrons are in the atom. Atom Name Silicon

  16. + + + Atomic Number • The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom - What would be the atomic number of this atom? - -

  17. + + + Mass Number • The total number of protons and neutrons in an atom’s nucleus • Expressed in Atomic Mass Units (amu) • Each proton or neutron has a mass of 1 amu What would be the mass number of this atom? - +  3  4 - 3 protons + 4 neutrons = a mass number of 7 amu Why did we not account for the electrons when calculating the mass number? -

  18. How do you read the PERIODIC TABLE?

  19. What is the ATOMIC NUMBER? • The number of protons found in the nucleus of an atom Or • The number of electrons surrounding the nucleus of an atom.

  20. What is the SYMBOL? • An abbreviation of the element name.

  21. What is the ATOMIC WEIGHT? • The number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.

  22. How do I find the number of protons, electrons, and neutrons in an element using the periodic table? • # of PROTONS= ATOMIC NUMBER • # of ELECTRONS= ATOMIC NUMBER • # of NEUTRONS= ATOMIC _ ATOMIC WEIGHT NUMBER
