Literacy and Poverty • The literacy rate has increased to 65.38 percent from 52.20 percent • between 1991 and 2001 • The incidence of poverty has declined by almost 50 percent between • 1977-78 and 1999-2000, from 51.3 percent in 1977-78 to 28.6 percent • in 1999-2000. • During the same period, the rural poverty declined from 53.1 percent • to 27.1 percent and urban poverty from 45.2 percent to 23.6 percent • (10th Plan).

There is a need to integrate the entire system of delivery of healthcare to the benefit of all parties involved.

Information Technology (IT) has the potential to improve thequality, safety, and efficiency of health care • IT allows health care providers to collect, store, retrieve, and transfer information electronically • The Indian healthcare industry is quite large and is estimated to be worth Rs.100,000 crore • Expected to grow at the rate of 13 per cent for the next six years which amounts to an addition of Rs 10,000 to Rs. 15,000 crore each year. • With a turnover of around $2.8 trillion, the global healthcare industry is the largest service sector in the world.
