  2. Texts and Society • Texts make comments about issues in society • Do texts reflect the issues that already exist in society? Eg: • Do texts create some of the issues that exist in society? Eg:

  3. The Institution and Individual Experience What does this mean?? • You will need to define and understand both of the key terms • You will need to understand the relationship between the individual’s experience within institutions

  4. What is an institution? • What is the purpose of an institution • What are the key aspects that are common to institutions? • List institutions to which you belong • Explain HOW these institutions influence you? (Your behaviour? Your beliefs? Your values? You culture? Your life?)

  5. INDIVIDUALexperience • What is an individual? • What is an experience? • What is yourindividualexperience of institutions?

  6. Have you had good experiences with institutions? Bad experiences? Explain and provide evidence.

  7. How have different institutions influenced who you are NOW? • How have different institutions affected • communities? • Societies? • The world?

  8. ????????What do TEXTS say about institutionsandtheir effect onindividual experience?

  9. Make a list of as many texts that you can think of that say something about institutions and their effect on individual experience. (eg: songs, poems, movies, books, tv shows, magazines)

  10. Chose three texts from your list (each one must be a different text type). Write: • What is the purpose of each institution? • What are the key aspects that are common to all three institutions? • What are the key aspects that are NOT common to all three institutions

  11. WRITE: • What does each text suggest about the institution and individual experience? • Who are the individuals within the institution? • How have the institutions affected • Individuals? • communities? • societies? • the world?

  12. Module C: Texts and Society • This module requires students to explore and analyse texts used in a specific situation. It assists students’ understanding of the ways that texts communicate information, ideas, bodies of knowledge, attitudes and belief systems in ways particular to specific areas of society.

  13. Electives in this module are designed around a specific social context and the texts that are characteristic of and valued within it. Prescribed texts will be drawn from a variety of professional and social contexts. Students are also required to supplement this study with texts of their own choosing related to the module.

  14. Students explore the role of textual features in the shaping of meaning in specific contexts. They develop the communication skills necessary for a wide variety of personal, social, historical, cultural and workplace contexts. Composition focuses on analysing and experimenting with textual forms characteristic of the specific contexts. These compositions may be realised in a variety of forms and media.

  15. Module C: Texts and Society In this section you will be assessed on how well you: • Demonstrate analysis of the ways texts shape meaning • Organise, develop and express ideas using language appropriate to audience, purpose and form What does the rubric mean??????

  16. In this section you will be assessed on how well you: • Demonstrate analysis of the ways texts shape meaning • How does the composer involve you/engage you/”grab” your attention – and, consequently, - • how does the composer get his/her message across?

  17. This means…what techniques (language features/literary devices) are used in each text?? • You must consider: ァPurpose ァAudience ァResources of language ァTone ァEffectiveness of the text in making its point

Organise, develop and express ideas using language appropriate to audience, purpose and form What type of text do you have to write? o What are the “rules” of the particular text type? o Who is the intended audience? o What is the purpose of the text type? – Discuss? Persuade? Inform? o What style of language should you use?? ァFormal? Conversational? Persuasive? Journalese?

  19. o Express your knowledge and understanding of the question AND module. • Use key words from the question and the module • Define the key words and ideas of the question AND the module • Include relevant explanations from supporting texts

Organise, develop and express ideas • Introduction + supporting paragraphs + concluding statements • Correct paragraph structure • S-statement from you introduction • E –explain the who/what/why of the statement • T –technique used in the text • E – example from the text (quotation) • E – Effect of the technique in: • It suggests______________ or • This positions the responder to feel/see/react___ • L – link to ‘question’ and the next paragraph
