  2. Kinetic Theory of Matter Matter is made up of particles which are in continual random motion.

  3. STATES OF MATTERSOLIDS • Particles of solids are tightly packed, vibrating about a fixed position. • Solids have a definite shape and a definite volume. Heat

  4. Solids (cont.) • 2 types of solids • Armorphous—atoms no particular order (ex.rubber/wax) • Crystalline—atoms arranged in a specific pattern (minerals, ice)

  5. STATES OF MATTERLIQUID • Particles of liquids are tightly packed, but are far enough apart to slide over one another. • Liquids have an indefinite shape and a definite volume. Heat

  6. Liquids (cont.) • Surface tension– force acting on particles at surface of liquid to form spherical drops • Viscosity—resistance to flow • High viscosity—slow flow (ex. Maple syrup in January) • Low viscosity– high flow (ex. Water coming out of faucet)

  7. STATES OF MATTERGAS • Particles of gases are very far apart and move freely. • Gases have an indefinite shape and an indefinite volume. Heat

  8. Gas (cont.) • Boyles’ Law—if temperature remains constant as volume of gas decreases pressure increases and visa versa.

  9. Gas Laws (cont.) • Charles’ Law—if pressure remains constant as temperature increases volume increases and visa versa

  10. STATES OF MATTERPLASMA • A plasma is an ionized gas. • A plasma is a very good conductor of electricity and is affected by magnetic fields. • Plasmas, like gases have an indefinite shape and an indefinite volume. • Plasma is the • common state • of matter
