  1. Global Screening 2011 What Is Our Vision? What Does It Mean For Your Child? Spring 2011 http://www.mcps.k12.md.us/curriculum/enriched

  2. Why Global ScreeningPOTENTIAL Within every child’s brain is a mind teeming with ideas and dreams and abilities unrealized. The greatest thing we can do as parents, teachers and friends―is to nourish that potential, both intellectual and humanitarian, so that each mind can fulfill its promise to the benefit of mankind.” Dr. Ben Carson

  3. Why Global Screening • Required by state law; mandated by MCPS policy • Screen all Grade 2 students • … accelerated and enriched curricula will be provided to all students who have capability or motivation to accept the challenge of such a program. MCPS Policy

  4. Creating a New Vision It is not about a label. It is about… • Access to opportunity―no gatekeeping, no barriers • Equity in high expectations for all students • Quality of a challenging instructional program Access + Equity + Quality = Success

  5. Global Screening 2011Multiple Criteria for GT Identification

  6. GT COMMITTEE • Includes principal, classroom teachers, and other staff in the building, such as ESOL teacher, resource teacher, reading teacher, counselor • Collects and analyzes student data • Makes recommendations for instruction based on data • Makes decisions about identification based on data

  7. POTENTIAL What educators and psychologists recognize as giftedness in children is really potential giftedness, which denotes promise rather than fulfillment and probabilities rather than certainties about future accomplishments. How high the probabilities are in any given case depends on the match between a child’s budding talents and the kinds of nurturance provided. A. Harry Passow, 1985

  8. How does all of this mean? • In 2nd grade all students go through the screening process. • In 3rd grade ANY student can apply to the Highly Gifted Center. • If accepted students would begin attending the Highly Gifted Center in 4th grade. • In 5th grade ALL students can apply for the Middle School Magnet Program. • Each day at Gibbs your teachers are trying to continuously improve their instruction to meet the needs of ALL students.
