  3. Mission Life The Spanish government wanted the number in catholic missions to grow. This was because California had an important part of Spain’s land in North America , witch was called New Spain. To attract large numbers of California Indians, the missions had to be built near where groups lived. The missions were also built near natural resources such as rivers, forests, and fertile land that was good for growing crops.

  4. Problems at Missions • The Native Americans were not free to leave • The resistance was violent • Many died from diseases • Forced to give up their way of life • Worked hard • Learned Spainish • Made new things • Gifts such as beads, clothing, and food
