They do this by talking more loudly or softly, more quickly or more slowly. Tell students that as they read, they should • Think about what is happening in the story • Notice when a character is speaking and think about how he or she is feeling. • Turn to page 350 of “ A Pen Pal for Max” and listen as I read a part. • I will read an exciting part of the story and use expression to help show what is happening.
