  2. Prewriting Stage Angie Whitaker ELA4W1. The student produces writing that establishes an appropriate organizational structure, sets a context and engages the reader, maintains a coherent focus throughout, and signals a satisfying closure. The student • Selects a focus, an organizational structure, and a point of view based on purpose, genre expectations, audience, length, and format requirements. PLO: Students will complete a graphic organizer during the prewriting stage in order to draft a business letter.

  4. Prewriting Stage AUDIENCE To whom you are writing the business letter to. TOPIC REASON FOR WRITING THE LETTER • To make a suggestion • Give an opinion • Make a complaint • Request permission or information • Order a product • Remember • Do not worry about spelling • and punctuation • Jot down ideas • Sentence fragments are ok PURPOSE To organize and categorize your ideas based on your topic on the graphic organizer .

  11. Practice Activity Prewriting Topic : Write a business letter to Sodexo Campus Services requesting a better variety of dining facilities in the College of Education.Students will use the shared pen technique to complete a Graphic organizer over the assigned topic.

  12. Topic: Write a Business Letter to Dr. Philip L. Gunter, Dean of Education, requesting the privilege to wear jeans on Friday’s during practicum.Students will complete their own graphic organizer over the assigned topic. Assessment Activity Prewriting

The student • Selects a focus, an organizational structure, and a point of view based on purpose, genre expectations, audience, length, and format requirements. • Writes texts of a length appropriate to address the topic of tell the story. • Uses appropriate structures to ensure coherence. • PLO: Students will use the completed graphic organizer during the drafting stage to draft a business letter.

  14. Drafting Stage • Second stage of the writing process • Use information from the graphic organizer to write the business letter • Remember not to spend a lot of time on spelling and punctuation • Rough draft is written

Drafting Stage: Parts of a Business letter • Return Address: the writer’s address (also called a header) • Date:month, day , & year • Inside address: • Who the letter is to: their name, title, and company • Address of person receiving the letter • Greeting, Salutation: Dear Sir or Madame, To whom it may concern, Dear (a person’s name)(should be professional)

Drafting Stage: Parts of a Business Letter Cont. • Body of the letter(the purpose and details) • Tell who you are and why you are writing • Give a fact, detail, or example that supports your request • Give reason to act upon your request or concern • Thank the person for their considerations, reading your letter • Closing: (Regards, Sincerely, Yours Truly, From, Thank You) • Your signature • Your printed name

  17. Practice Activity: Drafting Topic :Write a business letter to Sodexo Campus Services requesting a better variety of dining facilities in the College of Education building. Students will write a business letter using the Shared Pen Technique and the graphic organizer from the Prewriting Stage.

  18. Assessment Activity Drafting Topic:Write a Business Letter to Dr. Philip L. Gunter, Dean of Education, requesting the privilege to wear jeans on Friday’s during practicum. Students will write a business letter using their graphic organizer that they completed during the prewriting stage.

  19. Revising/Editing Stage Katina Barry ELA4W4. The student consistently uses a writing process to develop, revise, and evaluate writing. The student b. Revises selected drafts to improve coherence and progression by adding, deleting, consolidating, and rearranging text. d. Edits to corrects errors in spelling, punctuation, etc. PLO: The students will revise their business letters by adding, deleting, consolidating, and rearranging information.

  20. Revising/Editing Stage • Rough draft is complete, proofread and evaluate the piece of writing to enhance it. • “Fine-tuning” Stage • Even when a piece of writing sounds great, it can still be revised and edited to be more effective and flow even better!

Revising/Editing Stage • Check for mistakes in spelling, punctuation, and grammar. • Modify wording or sentence structure to eliminate unclear statements. • Verify that all of the components of the Business Letter are included- • Return and inside addresses • Date • Greeting/salutation • Body and closing • Signature and printed name
