Overview of the Overview • This is a set of comparisons between what you’re used to with Aleph and the new LSP • There are differences in vocabulary that will take a while to become commonplace for everyone • Opening and logging into Alma, as well as moving around will become easier the more you use it • A change related to public searching is there will be no separate OPAC after August 2019, but there is a Library Catalog option in Primo that will function similarly

Opening/Launching Aleph Alma Cloud-based architecture Software hosted by Ex Libris Opened with your browser of choice – Chrome, Firefox, IE, Safari, etc. Individuals can bookmark the link or libraries can add it to an intranet • Client-server architecture • Client software installed on each machine to connect to Aleph server • Opened by locating shortcuts on your workstation desktop
Your Account Aleph Alma & Primo One account that functions as your patron account and your staff login • Patron account with barcode to borrow materials • Staff account with separate credentials to access Aleph client application
Logging In Aleph Alma & Primo Depends on configuration: Login can redirect to campus authentication system using your campus credentials (External) Accounts can be Internal with credentials maintained in Alma • Username and password stored and maintained in the Aleph database
Functionality Aleph Alma Options available in browser interface will vary based on user roles added to your account • Based on permissions • Open different modules as needed

Public Searching – Interfaces Aleph Alma & Primo Primo VE discovery system is the single public-facing interface No separate OPAC but has a Library Catalog option • OPAC - Online Public Access Catalog - is the public interface to Aleph catalog data • Some libraries subscribed to EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) or other product separately
Public Searching – Data Aleph Alma & Primo Discovery system uses central index – Primo Central Index (PCI) – that includes article-level metadata in addition to MARC records in Alma Library Catalog option may function like an OPAC • OPAC searches bibliographic & holdings data in MARC and MFHD format and related item information in the Aleph catalog

Public Interface – After • After Go Live, everything is integrated into the new Primo discovery system • Search options/tabs may change
Search Interfaces Alma Primo Public interface Must authenticate to see personal library account May need to authenticate to search some databases • Staff only interface • Must authenticate and have more than just Patron user role assigned
Accessing Alma • URL formats vary by authentication method but in general have the following format • https://suny-XXX.alma.exlibrisgroup.com/ • Replace the XXX with your library’s 3-character code
