  1. GOD THE SONThe Three Offices of Jesus Christ Christianity 101 – Lesson 7 Immanuel Lutheran Church Clayton Township, Neenah, Wisconsin

  2. Opening Discussion I do not recall seeing a crucifix (a depiction of Christ on the cross) in any Lutheran churches I have attended, only empty crosses. I know the crucifix is prominent among Roman Catholics and is displayed in churches and homes. Is there a reason for this?

  3. Our Savior’s Names She will give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins. Matthew 1:21

  10. Our Savior’s Names The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is,the Christ). John 1:41 Christ means… Messiah means… (Greek) (Hebrew) Anointed One

  11. Our Savior’s Offices God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. Acts 10:38 As the Christ, or Messiah (Anointed One), Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit to serve in three distinct offices.

  12. Our Savior’s Offices “The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to Him.” Deuteronomy 18:15 One office that Jesus has is that of… Prophet

  13. Prophet But the LORD said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you.” Jeremiah 1:7

  14. Prophet But the LORD said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you.” Jeremiah 1:7 The Old Testament prophets who were sent by God… told people God’s Word

  15. Prophet Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. Luke 8:1

  16. Prophet Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. Luke 8:1 While on earth Jesus served as Prophet by… speaking God’s Word

  17. Prophet “He who listens to you listens to Me; he who rejects you rejects Me; but he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.” Luke 10:16

  18. Prophet “He who listens to you listens to Me; he who rejects you rejects Me; but he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.” Luke 10:16 From heaven Jesus serves as Prophet by… speaking God’s Word through Christians today

  19. Our Savior’s Offices Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. Hebrews 3:1 A second office Jesus has is that of… Priest

  20. Priest Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. Hebrews 5:1

  21. Priest Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. Hebrews 5:1 The Old Testament priests… represented people before God and offered sacrifices for sins

  22. Priest Unlike the other high priests, He does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when He offered Himself. Hebrews 7:27

  23. Priest Unlike the other high priests, He does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when He offered Himself. Hebrews 7:27 While on earth Jesus served as High Priest by… sacrificing Himself once and for all for our sins

  24. Priest Therefore He is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because He always lives to intercede for them. Such a high priest meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. Hebrews 7:25-26

  25. Priest Therefore He is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because He always lives to intercede for them.Such a high priest meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. Hebrews 7:25-26 From heaven Jesus serves as High Priest by… interceding for us as our Mediator (Go-between)

  26. Our Savior’s Offices “You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to Me.” John 18:37 A third office Jesus has is that of… King

  27. King “Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.” 1 Samuel 18:20

  28. King “Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.” 1 Samuel 18:20 The Old Testament kings… led God’s people and fought their battles for them

  29. King The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:56-57

  30. King The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:56-57 While on earth Jesus proved He was King by… fighting the battle against sin and death & by winning the victory for us

  31. King If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that He might be the Lord of both the dead and the living. Romans 14:8-9

  32. King If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that He might be the Lord of both the dead and the living. Romans 14:8-9 As our King, Jesus… rules our hearts and lives through His Word

  33. King That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under His feet and appointed Him to be head over everything for the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills everything in every way. Ephesians 1:19b-23

  35. King From heaven Jesus shows He is King by… ruling over everything for our eternal good

  36. Agree or Disagree? • The name Jesus means “Son of God.” • Jesus Christ rules the hearts and lives of believers by His Word. • Jesus Christ still works and serves us while in heaven. • Every time we read about an Old Testament prophet, priest, or king, we can think about Jesus Christ in the New Testament.

  37. Discussion Question #1 Why was Jesus baptized by John if He was sinless?

  38. Discussion Question #2 Why is it so important to have an “objective basis” for our assurance of salvation?

  39. Discussion Question #3 What does “present encounter with the living Christ” mean, and what is the danger of such an emphasis?

  40. Memory Treasure If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. Romans 14:8

  41. Second Article of the Apostles’ CreedFirst Half I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. What does this mean? I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord.

  42. Second Article of the Apostles’ CreedSecond Half He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil, not with gold or silver but with his holy, precious blood and with his innocent suffering and death. All this he did that I should be his own, and live under him in his kingdom, and serve him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as he has risen from death and lives and rules eternally. This is most certainly true.

  43. Closing Prayer Risen and ascended Lord, You now pray for us at the throne of the Father. Keep all those whom You love in Your name, O Lord, that they may be one even as You and the Father are One; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
