Review Notes from Previous Lecture and Feedback: • Speaking the “Language of Technology” is part of being considered an industry professional. • To be credible you have to know the terms and know how to use them. It’s expected. • Find a few sources and build some habits of 1) reading to stay informed and 2) applying and practicing your skills.. • Handed out the draft Syllabus and discussed non credit assignment • Review the syllabus/discuss with parent/guardian • Note any questions for discussion on Monday • Think about opportunities to apply skills in this class to other major upcoming assignments or projects. • Reviewed log in and began to Navigate Excel Workbook/worksheets • Created or added new worksheets

  5. Principles of Technology 2013-2014 Principles of Information Technology (One-Half to One Credit). • (a) General requirements. This course is recommended for students in Grades 9-10. • (b) Introduction. Students develop computer literacy skills to adapt to emerging technologies used in the global marketplace. Students implement personal and interpersonal skills to prepare for a rapidly evolving workplace environment. Students enhance reading, writing, computing, communication, and reasoning skills and apply them to the information technology environment. • (c) Knowledge and skills. • (1) The student demonstrates the necessary skills for career development, employability, and successful completion of course outcomes. The student is expected to: • (A) identify and demonstrate positive work behaviors that enhance employability and job advancement such as regular attendance, promptness, attention to proper attire, maintenance of a clean and safe work environment, appropriate voice, and pride in work; • (B) identify and demonstrate positive personal qualities such as flexibility, open-mindedness, initiative, listening attentively to speakers, and willingness to learn new knowledge and skills; • (C) employ effective reading and writing skills; • (D) employ effective verbal and nonverbal communication skills; • (E) solve problems and think critically; • (F) demonstrate leadership skills and function effectively as a team member; • (G) identify and implement proper safety procedures; • (H) demonstrate an understanding of legal and ethical responsibilities in relation to the field of information technology; and • (I) demonstrate planning and time-management skills such as project management and storyboarding. Ref: TEA - §130.271. Implementation of Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Information Technology. The provisions of this subchapter shall be implemented by school districts beginning with the 2010-2011 school year. We can consider integrating elements so that this class helps you with your assignments ( powerpoint presentations/ papers or scientific data). Work Smart >> I will ask for ideas (from a few students) how you might want to integrate some of the technology skills into other classes. You can work as group and see what the most beneficial projects might be for several of you that have an upcoming common assignment

After completing this class, you will have an understanding of be able to apply the: • The key skills commonly used and applied in the technology field of information technology • Key elements of planning and technical communications that are needed for success in technology fields • Elements of how to work effectively as an individual or on a team on assigned tasks and projects • How to use common application software and be aware of industry history and trends and common practices/terms and standards

Computer Usage /Log in -Username and Passwords!!! • Student Log-in information is available Today!!! • The official class rosters are in WebSmart are still in work but Mr Shafer has assigned both user id and initial passwords to each student in our class. Please thank Mr Shafer!!! • User id = is all lowercase and consist of alphanumeric characters ( 1st letter of 1st name & lastname & last two digits of year of your High School graduating year (e.g. for 2017 > 17) • For example: Using an If/then construct: If “Luc Tucker” then , “username= ltucker17” , “ not Luc “ • Initial User Password = the mixed case 1st letter cap “P” and then all lowercase & current year as in “Password2013” • Final Password = Alpha-numerical characters. • Once you log in the system will ask you to reset your password to one you can remember • Please manage your password. Do not share it with anyone. Please remember it at all times. • Mr Shafer EMPHASIZED awareness of 2 items: • employee IT policy in the Teacher Handbook, • go over the Student IT usage policy in the Student Handbook prior to the use of any district technology.

The PC - Assessing or evaluating where you are now ?? application environment • Application Program is Microsoft Office – 2010 is what we are using as the application environment. • In Excel 2010, the maximum worksheet size is: Worksheet = a Table of Data (we discussed a Table). Data in Rows and Column ( Table Dimensions is max number of Rows x max number of Columns) e.g 18 x 4 was used for our class table sorting exercise. Id#/First name /lastname/ Rank Order by Lastname. • 1,048,576 rows by 16,384 columns. Work Sheets (Sheets) in a workbook Limited by available memory (default is 3 sheets);Max # ofOpen workbooks Limited by available memory and system resources. • New versions available (office 2013) older versions – 2007/2003/ office xp • Home and Student versions - $139 /Business versions - $219 / so-called professional versions - $399 and Subscription versions -$99 for one year (then renew) etc. • Office 356 is new workgroup or office (distributed license server cloud version)

  13. Powering Up the PC - Class Protocol 1 (rules/etiquette observed ) CLASS EXERCISE: • Go silently and orderly to computers- and sit down. Any PC will do. • Look for power on /off for Display or Monitor - Turn on Monitor • Look for power on /off button on Desktop – Turn on Computer • Results: Default USER Log on screen appears • Note: When Mr. Shafer assigns you your user id and temporary Password we can begin your initial Log on (will ask you to change your password to something more secure). Save that pwd and use it to log in in the future. • As mentioned earlier we are waiting on the enrollment system to feed Mr Shafer the information to generate user id, etc - Expected Mid Sept ( 1 to 2 weeks max ) (we are 1st on the list. Reverse Step and Turn off equipment approximately 10 minutes before end of each class.. Don’t Forget.
