  1. Students Use of Public Spaces

Commons • Students ten to sit together in groups of four or more • The very few individuals who sit alone are usually doing work and do not stay long • People sit together with people who are similar to them • Sports teams always sit together and usually wear their teams apparel • People spend anywhere from 3 to 5 min in line for food and the most popular food items are pasta and the home cooked meals • Almost all students get desserts, cookies are the most popular items

Kehr Union • Husky Lounge • -Students who sit by windows are often alone • -There is always a 20 minute wait for food • - The majority of students go to the deli • - Guys usually sit by the TV to watch sports • Fireside Lounge • - Tends to be very quiet • - People come and go • - Students who are doing school work sit alone • - Some students use this area to work on group projects • - Some students take advantage of this room to take a nap • Game room/ computer lab • - Groups of students play ping-pong and pool • - Some people came alone to print things and leave • - Some came in groups to talk and socialize on the couches

Starbucks/ Gathering Place • Starbucks • Popular “hang-out” for students and staff • Students and staff order coffee and stay to chat with friends and colleagues • The majority of students tend to get their coffee and head straight to class • Gathering Place • Groups of students spend time gossiping and texting then on school work • Some people come to work on projects but tend to get distracted • This place is mainly a social area where people come to regroup before sitting through another class

  5. Misc. Locations • Other Eating Areas • Monty’s and IK are very popular and people tend to go in groups • People go there to eat and socialize • They go to eateries other than the commons for more variety • Fountain • It is a beautiful area that often goes unnoticed • There is a lot of activity but students do not stay here for long periods of time • Laundry Room • A quiet place for homework and studying • Soda and snack machines are rarely used • It is busiest on a Sunday afternoon

  6. Our Conclusions • We did not realize how many opportunities and locations Bloomsburg University has to provide its students
