  2. What is it? • Thrombophlebitisis when a blood clot in a vein causes an acute swelling of that vein • This swelling can occur in superficial or deep veins • Typically this only affects veins of the lower extremities

  3. How does it develop? • Thrombophlebitis is caused by a blood clot • These clots can be caused by: • Bed rest • Extended periods of sitting or inactivity • Injury to the vein • Inherited blood clotting disorder

  4. Examination • Some of the common signs and symptoms: • Redness • Swelling • Warmth • Tenderness • Pain • If the vein is superficial, it may appear to be red and firm to the touch

  5. Intervention • Refer out to physician for more testing: • Ultrasound • Imaging • Blood test • Possible treatments include • Medication • Surgery
