Schmidt using FIB Erik. Schmidt, an intern from Mt. Hebron High School, used the focused ion beam (FIB) to “write” the smallest Beethoven’s music ever written during July 2007. The FIB pattern (above right) of the opening bar of Beethoven’s 5th symphony is only 2 µm in width. The melody of the entire first movement of the 5th symphony could be written using FIB over the cross section of one Beethoven’s hair.
