  2. Was ist Gemütlichkeit? • The German concept of Gemütlichkeit cannot be defined with one word. Other languages, like English and French have adopted the word because of its philosophically warm, kind nature. • Gemütlichkeit connotes: • the sense of belonging • social acceptance • cheerfulness • the absence of anything hectic • the opportunity to spend quality time • tolerance • And that’s what German at Murchison is all about! • Eins, zwei, drei: Gemütlichkeit !

  3. Speakwithyour „Stammtisch“ (table of friends) aboutwhatmakesyoufeel „gemütlich“ or „nicht gemütlich“ at home and at school. Step One: With your table: Talk about things that you find “gemütlich” and “nichtgemütlich” at home. Person 1 takes notes in the appropriate column. Person 3 keeps conversation moving. Step Two: Talk about things that you find “gemütlich” and “nichtgemütlich” in a classroom. Person 1 takes notes in the appropriate column. Step Three: Person 1: circle 4 items that your table agrees on. Step Four: Person 2 reports circled items to the class. Each member of the group writes his most important school items on a sticky note. Step Five: Person 4 brings sticky notes to our class poster, discriminating between positive and negative experiences at school for the group. Class discussion about “gemütlich” expectations.
