  1. IMAGE SUMMARY • IMAGE set up to provide a venue for discussion between the different Integrated Modelling (IM) activities. Scope: • Standardization of formats and interfaces • Starting point for collaborations  week long meeting in Cadarache hosted by ITER in early September • Machine descriptions • Transport Solvers • Initial work was originally expected to start this meeting • Delayed as an IMAGE project activities in partners though • V&V metrics and standardized test cases • Software Standards • Short IMAGE session only in this meeting: • Report on the ITER IM meeting • Plans and status of the IM projects Summary CDBM IMAGE meeting, 07

  2. ITER IM Workshop (Houlberg) Status report from the first ITER Integrated Modelling workshop • 1 week meeting three weeks ago • Participants from EU, US, JP, RF and ITER • Focus on data structures and code interfaces • Detailed topical discussion on code interfaces • Collaborative opportunities – harmonizing data structures • EU ITM data structure implementation(CPO’s) “template” to base future discussions on • Framework tools • US KEPLER tool “paradigm” for application framework? • ITER rather than ITPA host for continued “IMAGE” work? Future topics to be addressed: • Enhanced coordination of scenario modelling between ITER and the ITER parties • Verification and validation procedures Summary CDBM IMAGE meeting, 07

  3. Plans and Status of partner programs • JP (Yagi) • BPSI (TASK, Topics-IB and Sonic) • Staged development phases with 2 & 5 year horizons • RF (Konovalov) • Continued efforts centered around ASTRA + DINA • Aligned with ITER shorter term needs • EU (Strand) • ITM-TF simulation tools, integration technologies 2 + 5 year horizon. • US (Bateman) • Report on the FSP Workshop Report. Start FY 2009: 5 + 15 year horizon scaling up to 28M$/yr http://www.lehigh.edu/~infusion/FSP_report.pdf • Ptransp status and plans on the 2.5 yr Horizon. • Collaboration opportunities: facilitate sharing of modules and tools - data structures and tools. • Bilateral exchanges of tools and ideas • Discussions guided / “moderated” by ITER Summary CDBM IMAGE meeting, 07

  4. BPSI-plans and status TASK code is under development as a core code of BPSI and now TASK V1.02 is available as an open source. http://bpsi.nucleng.kyoto-u.ac.jp/task/ • developing BPSI data interface (BPSD) including standard data set and data exchange interface, taking account of the compatibility with EU ITM-CPO and US SWIM-Plasma State. • BPSI execution interface (BPSX) is also under development for integrated • monolithic approach and coordinated mono-functional approach. TOPICS-IB is under development in JAEA for integrated simulation of burning plasmas SONIC is under development in JAEA as a SOL/Divertor simulation code Interface between TASK and SONIC will be developed as a future work Summary CDBM IMAGE meeting, 07

  5. RF - 2007-2008 plans • Improved funding situation on the longer term • Plasma start-up and termination • RWM theory, code development, modeling and control options • FPP – NBI modules, code development for self consistent simulation of the AE excitation and associated FP transport • Reorganization of the codes according to ITER ITM strategy • Detailed description of the physics model and mathematical algorithms employed – key issue for successful benchmarking and mutual progress! • Qualification part of V&V Summary CDBM IMAGE meeting, 07

  6. EU Integrated Tokamak Modelling TF • The longer term aim is not a single (transport) code but a complete simulation environment • 2008 - Start of the Gateway for IM and deployment of • code platform • Implies a complete set of data structures and associatedtools • A fullyoperational portal/workflow configuration • Major code releases from all of IntegratedModellingProjects • 2009 - Extended set of platformtoolsforming a • predictivecorephysicscapacity for ITER • Production levelmodelling for ITER and a standard tool for currentexperiments • local clusters and grid • 2010/11 - Wholedevicemodellingcapabilityincluding • comprehensivecore-edgecoupling and first • principleselements • AimingtowardsBroaderApproach IFERC level computations Summary CDBM IMAGE meeting, 07

  7. PTRANSP developments • Predictive simulations are now being carried out with the PTRANSP code based on advances in the past 2-1/2 years • Significant advances in the physics content will be added during the next 2-1/2 years • High-quality widely used modules for transport, equilibrium, sources, sinks and large scale instabilities all interacting together in one code • Comparison with experimental data facilitated by extensive data analysis infrastructure already built into TRANSP • As a result of the effort planned for the next three years, PTRANSP will become significantly more comprehensive • PTRANSP will serve as a bridge to high-performance SciDAC Fusion Simulation Projects Summary CDBM IMAGE meeting, 07
