Buskett Our Woodlands • Aleppo Pine and Holm Oak trees used to be the most dominant tree species. • 4 pockets of old forest remnants of 20-25 Holm oak copses thought to be 500-900 years old. • Other areas of semi-natural but self regenerating wooded areas. • Foresta 2000 will in time become Malta’s largest tract of Mediterranean woodland.   5. Vision and Mission Vision ( What?) To see an increased level of awareness about the key role forests play for sustainable life on our planet. Mission (How?) To spread environmental education concerning forests and all their values among school children all around the world, through an action-oriented approach.

Your LEAF project • Appoint a forest team. • Choose an area of concern. • Devise an action plan. • Plan lessons based on a cross – curricular theme. • Include field trips to forests, in a park or similar areas. • Update your forest noticeboard regularly and try to involve the whole school community. • Compile a report.

LEAF Award • Openonlytoregisteredschools. • Once a school has successfully completed all phases of theactionplan the school applies for the award. • If a school meets all theset criteria it will be awarded a prestigous FSC/ PEFC certifiedwoodenplaque. • Each leaf will symbolize a schools commitment to the life learning ethos of the LEAF programme.

Project ideas • Monitoring ecologicallysensitivesitessuchasoldforestremnants. • Studies on indigenous trees to determine carbon dioxide uptake. • Assisting local councils in the upkeep of green areas within the locality. • Pressure on authorities/ project managers to make use of indigenousspecies for landscaping in new schools which are currently being built. • The impact of different plant varieties imported by Garden centres on local flora/ fauna.
