The Beginning of the Roman Empire • “Marked by the reign of Octavian” • Supposedly returned to principles of the republic • Senate gained power of “nominal governing” • Free elections were permitted • Octavian held a variety of occupations, but nonetheless ruled effectively no matter his position

  3. The Roman Empire • The Roman Empire had an autocratic form of government, with large territories in Europe and around the Mediterranean. • Military • Reduced the size but created a permanent army • The purpose of the military was to consolidate boundaries and ensure peace
