Digestion • 2 types • Mechanical • Physically breaking food into smaller pieces • Performed by: • Teeth/mouth • Stomach churning • Small intestine squeezing • Chemical • Breaking the molecules of food into smaller pieces with enzymes • Performed by: • Enzymes in mouth, stomach, small intestine

  4. Main Components • Alimentary canal – tube from mouth to anus • mouth/teeth/tongue – begins digestion • Esophagus – leads to stomach • Stomach – churns food • Small intestine – absorption of nutrients • Large intestine – removal of water, storage for waste • Anus – elimination of waste

  5. Accessory Components • Liver • Produces bile – enzyme that breaks down lipids • Gall bladder • Stores bile • Pancreas • Secretes digestive enzymes – break down carbs, proteins

  7. Urinary System • Functions: • Regulate blood ion concentration • Regulate salt concentration • Regulate blood pH • Regulate body water concentration • Excretion of wastes

  8. Components • Kidneys – filter waste and water out of blood • Ureters – passageway for urine to bladder • Bladder – stores urine • Urethra – passageway for urine out of the body
