  1. Energy

  2. A Few Types of Energy 1. Mechanical 2. Chemical 3. Thermal (Heat) 4. Solar 5. Electrical 6. Nuclear 7. Sound 8. Light

  3. Energy is the ability to do work • There are many forms of ENERGY • But they all fit into 2 Main Categories • Kinetic • Potential

  4. Kinetic Energy KE = ½ * mass * speed² Kinetic energy is the energy an object has because of its motion

  5. Kinetic Energy Also written as: KE =mv² 2 KE = kinetic energy ( J ) M = mass ( kg ) V2 = velocity squared (m/s) 2

  6. KE cont. • KE & Mass are directly proportional If the MASS isDOUBLED, The KE is DOUBLED. • KE & V2are exponentially proportional If V2-Doubles, KE Quadruples. (22 = 4 ) If V2 -Triples, KE =( 32 = 9 ) If V2- Quadruples , KE = ?

  7. Gravitational P E GPE = gravitational potential energy, J m = mass, kg g = accleration due to gravity, m/s2 h = height above reference level, m GPE = m * g * h GPE = Fg * h Gravitational potential energy depends on the weight of the body (mass and g) and its separation from Earth

  8. GPE cont. GPE = gravitational potential energy, J m = mass, kg g = acceleration due to gravity, m/s2 h = height above reference level, m GPE = m * g * h GPE = Fg * h What formula is (m x g) referencing? __________ Remember : Fg = ____ Therefore GPE is _____x _____

  9. Mechanical Energy(ME) Energy which is possessed by an object due to its motion OR its stored energy ME= KE + PE and ME = KE + GPE + EPE
