  4. Scientific Models • A scientific model is a simplified representation of a theory or a concept • Models are used when it is either impossible or impractical to create experimental conditions in which scientists can directly measure outcomes.

  5. Scientific Models • Models can be used to explain observations and make predictions. • Models are generated by selecting the key ideas or features of a process in a logical manner. What do you observe about this water cycle model? Where can you predict rain will fall?

  6. Scientific Models • Can take the form of a diagram, physical model, or a mathematical equation.

  7. What is astronomy? • Astronomy is the study of the universe. • The Ancient Greeks contributed significantly to the understanding of the universe. They used philosophical arguments and observational data to explain natural phenomena.
