  2. Decking • Traditionally 2x4 or 2x6 decking material has been used as deck boards • Now composite materials are more prevalent • No deck board wider than 6” shall be used to prevent cupping • The thickness of the deck board determines the allowable distance between joists

Stairways • Must have a minimum of 3 ft. net clear width • Minimum tread distance = 9” • Maximum Riser height = 8 ¼” • All steps must be consistent to within 3/8” • Riser openings shall not permit passage of a sphere 4” or larger • Stairs must be solidly attached to main deck or stair landing and rest firmly on ground • Stringer spacing depends upon decking material

  4. Building Stringers • Stringers are cut from the same material used for floor joists

How do I build the Stringers on my deck?? • First measure the distance from the top of the area where stairs will be to the ground • Then measure the distance out from the deck that you want your stairs to be • Put the two measurements together to create a rectangle/square on a piece of graph paper • Lay one of our 2x10 from the lumber yard inside the top corner (where the deck is) to the bottom outside corner where the ground is and trace the board • Then use the graph paper to help you figure measurements to get as close to possible equal stairs and draw them out using a ruler • Cut this out, trace on other 2x10s, cut stringers, glue

  6. Handrails • Shall be between 34” to 38” high from tread nosing • Must continue the full length of the stairs

  7. Guardrails • Guardrails shall be no less than 36” high • For any deck, porch, etc… that is 30” off the ground or higher guardrails must be installed • Horizontal spacing between vertical members in rails must be at least 4” (1/4” at our scale) • Decorative rails and other openings shall not allow a 6” sphere to pass through

  8. How to build guardrails? • Place posts a maximum of 3” apart from one another attached to the outside of the deck • Attach railtops from one post to the next with all splices falling over top posts • Run rail bottoms in between posts ¼” off of decking • Install pickets in any way with no openings large than ½”
