5. Klamath County Challenges
The need for more tech’s in Klamath County
This was met this June by adding 13 new tech’s to the county which give us 19 in total.
The need for bilingual tech’s
This was met this June by adding 3 ECI staff members to the Klamath County’s tech list.
For us at KTHFS the car seat program has been a challenge because we are a tribal entity, but I have to say it has been a positive challenge. We have actually been blessed in this program and in the surrounding communities that we serve, it has built a bridge with our different child service agencies, parents, professionals and community members who would have never walked through ours doors. They are now feeling comfortable with who we are and that we are able to offer and extend help for the common goal of child passenger safety.
6. NW Tribal Challenges
7. Challenges continued
A much needed change in attitudes of the tribal people starting from our elders all the way down to the youth, need to be willing to be proactive and consistent in the area of child passenger safety for all children, whether on the reservation or off, consistency is key.
Cultural barriers knowing there are still tribal people on reservations using cradle boards assuming they are safe as long as they are buckled. To some this is a traditional way of life. To some, it’s their custom.
Summing up
All these issues that have been brought up are not easy tasks to change and many will be on going. It’s going to take many people who are passionate, persistent and child passenger safety educated to make the changes happen, will it happen over night no, in time yes, I want to say with all that was said be encouraged there are changes taken place, we have many key people who stepped up to the plate and are willing to see these changes through for the tribes. There are great Health Educators, Sherriff’s, Nurses, Fireman, Child care workers and various staff members and parents who are embracing the programs that are being offered and everyone wants to see a positive, productive and healthy safe change towards child passenger safety.
