  12. PRINTING INDUSTRY OVERVIEW Being a visual communication method, print media competes well with other mass media, television, radio and internet. Increasing demand for high quality print products has been applying a pressure on printing companies to improve the production units and provide training and education for employees.

  17. The New Medium in Printing • The new world revolution began with the invention of printing. • Ts’ai Lun marked the historical revolution by inventing paper in 105 A.D. • Wong Chich printed the 1st book ‘Vajra Sutta’ of Buddhism using engraved wooden blocks

The New Medium in Printing • Johannes Guttenberg invented movable types in 1440 and printed the Bible in 1452 • Alois Senefelder invented Lithography around 1798 • Christopher Shales founded the Type Writer in 1868, this may have helped Mergenthaler Ottmar to produce a Linotype machine in 1880

  20. Evolution… • The communication through print media was one way transmission and mainly political or social. • Print media was used directly for political impression • Political behaviour influenced by printed material, thus the commercial behaviour too influenced.

  21. The New Medium in Printing • 19th – 20th Century • Transmission of speech electrically, Telephone and telegraphs in 1870s.. • Discovery of Radio Waves a way to send telegraph signals without cables in 1870s.. • Inventing Mechanical Television in 1920s… • Internet – in 1960s..

  25. The New Medium in Printing • The present generation have learned how to speak across the continents and oceans. • These powers were not gifted, they were inventions of science. • Print media has contributed towards this cause by transmitting the knowledge from one generation to the other.

The New Medium in Printing • In turn the networked digital media can be utilized to develop and upgrade knowledge in print technologies across the world. • Why do we still need to develop and learn printing in this second decade of super speed internet era ?? • Under what circumstance does the physical form of work better than electronic alternatives ??

  28. Education and Training Today’ s printing and graphic communications industry is a modern one with emphasis on computerised operation at all stages of production. Most businesses operate in clean, air-conditioned buildings, with skilled staff. The qualifications you earn in the printing and graphic communications industry are recognized worldwide. Trained industry professionals are in demand all over the world.

  29. Education and Training Career growth in the printing and graphic communications industry can take many forms, provided a better Education and Training. The SLAP is committed to develop the ways and means for this cause. Training institutes in the country produces trained personal annually and the industry provide opportunity for such trainees further by on-the-job training.

Education and Training Institutes • Sri Lanka Institute of Printing • INGRIN Institute of Printing and Graphics • National Apprentiship and Industrial Training Authority • Vocational Training Authority • Sri Lanka German Training College(Industry training commenced for the first time in this year, 1st batch-16 trainees in Mechanics, electronics and electrical maintenance of Press and Post Press equipment)

Vocational Education and Training Plan by Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission The E and T programs are implemented with the above institutions • For senior Managers • Short term programs to upgrade management skills • For Middle Managers • Enhance the capacity of existing Management courses

  32. Education and Training Programs • For supervisors • Enhance the existing courses and design new courses. • Operator grades • Litho Operators, Helpers, Binders and Guillotine Operators

Role of the SLAP in Education and Training • Mediate with the Training Authorities in designing E and T programs according to the need of the industry • Design and conduct / find sources to assist E and T programs which are not included in the TVEC plan • Sourcing institutions and programs where the print shop owners can be educated and trained in all aspects of printing business

Role of the SLAP in Education and Training • Organizing seminars and workshops for print shop owners to educate and update new developments of the industry • Planning to upgrade the professional standards of the members by sourcing the ways and means of advanced learning • SLAP is planning to source Printing and finishing equipment to setup technical training units in training institutes

FAGAT How the SLAP look at the FAGAT • FAGAT, A prestigious members from the countries who produce Equipment and Material • Sri Lankan printers use the technology, equipment and material of these member countries • Sri Lankan printers looking forward to better and stronger business relationship for mutual benefit

FAGAT • Sri Lankan printers are looking forward to technical corporation and learn the new business models developed by FAGAT member countries • The SLAP is looking forward to be part of developing a new business models together with FAGAT members • The SLAP is looking forward to involve actively and dynamically to evaluate and implement the FAGAT decisions in 8th forum and the current forum.

Responding to New Business Models • Sri Lankan Printing Industry continues to face economic challenges due to the present business climate • Printing Industry is still relies on domestic market other than the value addition process of Tea, Garment, Coir industry, and small quantum of Publications • Printing companies with sophisticated machinery are looking for export opportunities • SLAP is looking for promoting opportunities to form joint business ventures in Printing as well as Education and Training
