  1. Integrating Science with math Presented By: Lisa Kruszynski Ngwa Mohamad

  2. 4 Important ReasonsGlenn Commission Report p.7 • Rapid pace of change in the economy demands widespread math and science knowledge. • Necessary in everyday decision making. • Primary sources of lifelong learning. • Inextricably linked to the nation’s interests.

  3. More Reasons Why… • Brings together 2 important subjects and enhances both. • Combination better reflects the place of mathematics and science in the real world. • Provides students with a context for how they will use what they're learning once they finish school. • By integrating through an inquiry-based approach, teachers build a strong framework for both subjects.

  4. Checklist for Integration • Curriculum must strengthen and reinforce existing student knowledge. • Must extend knowledge into new areas. • The curriculum must make the connection to the real world.

  5. 4 Major Organizations • AIMS • Activities Integrating Math and Science • TIMS • Teaching Integrated Math and Science Project • GEMS • Great Explorations in Math and Science • TOPS • Teaching Opportunities for Partnersin Science

  6. About AIMS • AIMS website: • www.aimsedu.org • “…dedicated to improving the teaching and learning of math and science through a meaningful, integrated approach.” • ‘Model of Learning’ connects students to the material and real world.

  7. Download Activities Some free samples, most are about $2 Books Equipment and Manipulatives Workshops Articles Free Subscription to Newsletter Teacher Module Activity Book Sample Lab What AIMs Offers Area Tiles Math Chips Transparencies

  8. About TIMS Project • Housed within UIC’s Institute for Mathematics and Science Education (IMSE) • TIMS Website: • www.math.uic.edu/IMSE/TIMS/tims.html • Received more than $9 millionin external funding since 1990from the National ScienceFoundation (NSF) and otherorganizations.

  9. More About TIMS… • Project Activities: • Curriculum Development • Teacher Professional Development • School Outreach • Curriculum Development • Two sets of nationally recognized curriculum materials: • Math Trailblazers • TIMS Laboratory Investigations

  10. Array of Professional Development Programs Working with schools since the 1970’s. In 1996, they began TIM’s ‘95 program. 2 components of TIM’s Partnerships to improve instruction through staff development. Create materials for others to use. Staff Development and School Outreach

  11. About GEMS • GEMS website • http://www.lhsgems.org/ • resource for excellence in activity-based science and math • Guides, handbooks, and kits • Available for parents and at home activities! • You can become a member yourself!

  12. More about GEMS… • Kits available with all materials, projects, and directions • Kits are developed, reviewed, inspected, then produced to fit GEMS

  13. About TOPS • Another TOPS website • http://www.edserv.sjcoe.net/tops/history.html • Teaching Opportunities for Partners in Science • Was to bring retired scientists into elementary rural schools

  14. TOPS Goals • determine the feasibility of placing retired scientists in the schools • explore the different roles scientists could play in the schools • determine the preparation needed by the school and the Science Partner to make the program a success.

  15. A Few Examples… • Experiment 1: Matter • Another Way to Detect Matter: If it is matter, it occupies space. We can measure volume. • Experiment 2: Water • Drops On Pennies: Using charts to see how many drops of water you can fit on a penny.
