  1. Relationship between Earth, Sun and Moon

  2. As The Earth Turns • The rotation of the earth causes a predictable change … • What is the result? • Hint? • The side of earth facing the sun experiences day and the side not facing the sun experiences night. • This cycle occurs every 24 hours.

  3. As the Earth Travels • The revolution of the earth causes a predictable change … • What is the result? • Hint? • This cycle takes 365 days • What causes the earth to experience seasons? • Let’s find out by conducting a lab investigation! Reasons for the Seasons In this lab, you will use an Earth-sun model to make observations about factors that contribute to the seasons. Problem: What effect does the tilt of Earth’s axis have on the heat and light received by Earth as it revolves around the sun?

  4. As the Sun and Moon Pull • The rotation and revolution of the moon around the earth and the earth around the sun causes a predictable change….. • What is the result? • Hint? • Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of both the sun and the moon.

  5. As Gravity Pulls • What causes the tides to be high and low? • Let’s look at the animation again. • Keep these questions in mind: • What do you notice about the positions of the sun and moon during the high and low tides? • Which seems to have more of an effect, the sun or the moon? • Don’t forget to look at the key/legend at the bottom.

  6. As Water Moves • Let’s Find Out why there are bulges of water.

  7. As the Bulge Goes • Let’s Find Out! why the water bulges on both sides of the earth. • Centripetal force and rotational inertia • Now THOSE are science terms! You don’t have to remember those terms, but they are cool science words! • Let’s do a demonstration that will show you what happens to the water – watch what happens to the ribbon!

  8. Round and Round They Go • Are there other predictable changes from the motions of the sun, earth and moon? • Hint? • Eclipses! • Another hint? • Phases of the moon!

  9. So What Do We Need To Know? • The rotation of the earth causes ….. • The revolution of the earth causes …. • The tilt of the earth’s axis causes uneven heating of the earth, which causes …. • The gravitational pull of the sun and moon cause …. • The moon blocking the sun or the earth blocking the moon causes …. • The relative position of the earth, sun and moon result in ….
