  1. A B Supplemental Figure 1.Phylogenetic analysis of HMW binding domain amino acid sequences. Unrooted (radial) (panel A) and midpoint rooted (panel B) phylogenetic trees were constructed with MEGA version 2.1 (20) using the Neighbor-joining method with Poisson corrected distances. Bootstrap confidence values are shown at the branches of the midpoint rooted tree in panel B. Scale bars represent the number of amino acid substitutions per site. Phylogenetic trees are based on the binding domain of the HMW adhesins (as described in Table 2) using ClustalW alignment. In addition to the 1679hmw and 1598hmw sequences of NTHi strains 12, 5 and 15, phylogenetic trees include the sequences of the binding domains of 1679hmw from NTHi strains JOYC, PHM1, and K21, and the binding domains of 1598hmw from NTHi strains JOYC, PHM1, and LCDC (Sequences generously provided Sheena Loosmore). COPDBD refers to NTHi strain A95006 recovered from a patient with COPD (accession number AF180944) (40).
