Introduction • Background of public schools have Internet access • In 1996, President Clinton and vice-President Gore launched a national campaign to “wire” America’s K-12 schools • In fall 2001, 99 percent of public schools in the United States had access to the Internet. (U.S. Dept. of Ed., 2001).

  3. Introduction • Requirement of technology training for teacher • Computer training is essential for the one who wants to clear a teaching credential. • A qualified teacher should be able to use computers to facilitate teaching

The change of classroom environment • How the classrooms equip for accessing the Internet • Public schools have made consistent progress in expanding Internet access in instructional rooms, from 3 percent in 1994 to 87 percent in 2001. In 2001, 85 percent of public schools used broadband connections to access the Internet (Kleiner and Farris, 2002).

The change of classroom environment • The increase of using the Internet in the classroom • The sex roles in using computers • girls were comfortable searching for information, read what they found on the Internet and use it for communication. Boys were more likely to look at the pictures and quickly move on to the next link • The role of teacher to facilitate the changing • Most teachers seem to use the Internet for personal purpose

The benefit of using the Internet • Educational value of the Internet • Benefits for students • The Internet provides students with visual, audio and interactive experiences • Benefits for teachers • The Internet brings to teachers and their students resources, tools, world-wide contacts, and up-dated information. • Benefits for parents and guardians • Family members can share the pleasure of exploring the Internet and learn with their children

Obstacles and limitation to teacher using the Internet • “Lack of time” • “Time emerges as a major factor to be considered when preparing schools for successful technology progression, to allow all involved parties to resolve personal, technical and pedagogical challenges that arise” (Shearman, 1997). • Teacher attitudes for the Internet • Teachers feel technology is a powerful learning tool

  9. Conclusion • Educators see the Internet as a simple, common place tool that is essential to how we learn in this century.
