  5. Did You Know….. Vertical containments can help reduce the amount of work involved in cleanup. Vertical containments can define the work area when work is performed in only a few rooms of a house. They must remain intact until clearance is achieved unless the contract calls for a whole house cleaning. Vertical containments must remain intact to protect the occupants when the work allows for the occupant to remain in the house. The occupant must remain outside of the contained work area.

  6. The three types of lead work that apply to target housing and child occupied facilities are: 1. lead abatement 2. interim control 3. renovation The plans say lead work. What does that mean?

  7. Lead Testing • For lead abatement and interim control, painted surfaces can be tested by: • A certified risk assessor. • A certified lead-based paint inspector. • For renovation, painted surfaces can be tested by: • A certified renovator using lead check swabs. • A certified risk assessor. • A certified lead-based paint inspector.

  8. Abatement • A company performing lead abatement activities must be a certified lead abatement company. • At least one member of the crew has to be a certified lead abatement supervisor and must remain on site during all abatement activities. • All other crew members must be ether a certified lead abatement supervisor or a certified lead abatement worker.

  9. Renovation • Company performing renovation must be an EPA certified renovation firm. • At least one member of the crew must be an EPA certified renovator which requires taking an EPA approved 8 hour class. • The rest of the crew can also be certified renovators or they can be trained by a certified renovator for the day. • The certified renovator must be on site for all set up and clean up activities and be available while the work is on going.

  10. Interim Control • All workers must complete a 8 hour HUD approved lead work safe practice class. OR • A certified lead abatement supervisor may train the crew for the day and the supervisor must be on site for all set up and clean up activities and be available while the work is on going. • An interim control crew must also meet the renovation crew requirements.

  11. CLEAN UP Abatement Requires a passing clearance of the work site. Interim Control Requires a passing clearance of the work site. Renovation Requires cleaning verification of the work area.

  12. Rental house with an EBL child ELB report lists the window in the child’s room and the walls of the playroom as hazards. The landlord decides to prep and paint the playroom walls and replace the window. What are the minimum requirements to remove the hazard in the playroom? What are the minimum requirements to replace the window?

  13. Answer The playroom can be remediated with paint stabilization using an interim control crew with a certified abatement supervisor present for all set up and cleanup activities. The crew must also be RRP certified with the abatement supervisor being the certified renovator. Containment should be set up for the room and a clearance is required for the work area. The room can be reoccupied once the clearance has passed.

  14. Answer The playroom walls can also be stabilized by a lead abatement company that is also certified as a renovation company. The certified supervisor must also be a certified renovator. The company can do paint stabilization as interim control.

  15. Answer Replacement of the bedroom window must be performed by a lead abatement company. Containment should be used to isolate the work area. A clearance is required after the work is complete.
