  1. The Wright Brothers 5 Day Resource UnitBy: Tara Helton & Jay McCollum Who: 2nd Graders What: Social Studies Lessons Where: LaMendola Elementary & Holliday Elementary

  2. Content • The students will learn, in an active manner, about the Wright Brothers. • The appropriate concepts include creating timelines, researching, writing, and using various resources.

  3. Vocabulary • The vocabulary includes: • Airplane • Flyer • Kittyhawk • Dayton • Invention • Achieve • Flight • Machine

  4. Cognitive Objectives The students will: • Compare and contrast air travel from past to present. • Identify various aspects of the Wright Brother’s quest to be the first in flight. • Discuss differences between Kittyhawk, North Carolina and Dayton, Ohio.

  5. Affective Objectives The students will: • Relate to the Wright Brothers through research. • Share information with families and people in the community about the Wright Brothers.

  6. Activities Day 1 • Introduction: -Perform a read aloud using the book The Wright Brothers by Pamela Duncan Duncan Edwards. • Discuss information about the Wright Brothers gathered from the story.

  7. Activities Day 1 Continued • Development: • The students will research the Wright Brothers using various resources to create their own Wright Brothers book as a class.

  8. Activities Day 1 Continued • Culminating: • The students will share their finished class book of the Wright Brothers with family and friends. • Have the book published, if possible.

  9. Activities Day 2 • Introduction: • The students will view various photographs of the Wright Brothers.

  10. Activities Day 2 Continued • Development: • The students will create a poster of the Wright Brothers and can include information that they know about the Wright Brothers.

  11. Activities Day 2 Continued • Culminating: • The students will display their posters around the school and classroom.

  12. Activities Day 3 • Introduction: • A scale model of the flyer will be shown to the class.

  13. Activities Day 3 Continued • Development: • The students will be taken on a field trip to Wright State University, Paul Laurence Dunbar Library, to observe a life-size replica of the Wright Flyer. • The class will compare and contrast the model of the flyer to the life-size and discuss the measurements.

  14. Activities Day 3 Continued • Culminating: • The students will create their own version of the Wright Flyer using various materials available. • The flyers will be hung from the ceiling of the classroom.

  15. Activities Day 4 • Introduction: • The class will create a timeline of events for the current school year.

  16. Activities Day 4 Continued • Development: • The students will create a timeline of their own life.

  17. Activities Day 4 Continued • Culminating: • The students will create a timeline of the of the Wright Brothers.

  18. Activities Day 5 • Introduction: • The class will discuss what a museum is and what type of materials are included in a museum.

  19. Activities Day 5 • Development: • The class will gather material that they feel should be included in a museum for the Wright Brothers. • The students will create a museum of the Wright Brothers in their classroom.

  20. Activities Day 5 Continued • Culminating: • The class will invite family members, members of the communities, and other classes to walk through their museum.

  33. Posters Planes by Phang. This poster provides two different flyers that were created from the time of the Wright Brothers. History Through a Lens – First Flight This poster provides a description of the first flight and a very detailed picture of the Wright Brothers and their flyer. Bulletin Boards A bulletin board will be created by using photographs of the Wright Brothers.   39. Instructional Resources Webcast and Videoconference • 12 SecondsThat Changed the World • This webcast and videoconference is provided by NASA. It is approximately one hour in length and provides students to the principles and development of the aircraft over the past 100 years.
