  2. Panama is located at 8* 58* N and 79* 32* W, the Southern most of Central America. It’s borded by Costa Rica to the Northwest and Colombia to the Southeast. The country is situated on the isthmus connecting North and South America. It’s 2,206 miles from New York City using nonstop Continential Flight. Rodrigo de Bastidas, sailing westward from Venezuela in 1501 in search of gold, was the first European to explore the Zsthmus of Panama. • Panama was part of the Spanish Empire for 300 years (1538-1821). • Sir Francis Drake’s Famous raids on Panama in 1572-73 were aided by Panama Cimarrons and Spanish authorities were only able to bring them under control by making an alliance with them that guaranteed their freedom, in exchange for military support in 1582. • With the backing if the United States, Panama succeeded from Colombia in 1903, allowing the Panama Canal to be built by the U.S Army Corps of Engineers between 1904 and 1914 • Sir Francis Drake History
