  2. The Race to Space • The U.S and Soviet Union engaged in competition. • The Race to Space began in 1957. • The Soviet Union launched the first artificial satellite. • Sputnik, first artificial satellite.

  3. The Race to Space • U.S and Soviet Union agreed Outer Space was important. • Both countries wanted to prove they were better. • Wanted to prove their scientific superiority.

  4. The Race to Space • Premier Khrushchev thought communist technology was better. • President Kennedy wanted to beat Soviets to the moon. • The race to space became a race to the moon.

  5. Soviets • The Soviets launched Sputnik 1 in 1957. • They launched Sputnik 2 in 1957. • Sputnik 2 carried a dog into orbit with it.

  6. The United States • The first American satellite is launched. • It is called Explorer 1 and launched in 1958. • Explorer 2 launched and it failed to reach orbit. • The Vanguard 1 satellite is launched. • It continues to function for 3 years.

  7. NASA • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is formed. • NASA is formed in the U.S in 1958. • NASA is the federal agency devoted to exploring space.

  8. 1959 • Luna 1 is launched by the Soviets. • First man made object to orbit the sun. • Luna 2 is launched by the Soviets. • First man made object to impact the moon.
