  3. Young evangelist from England • Problem: “dead men preached to them” • Preached to crowds (6000) from GA to NE • Tent revivals • Blew “Gales of Heavenly Wind” throughout the colonies” • Orator and actor • Dramatic, emotional sermons George Whitefield

  4. Religious zealots • Created the Log College to educate ministers • Later known as College of New Jersey • Today- Princeton University • Gilbert (son)- became the leader of the “New Lights” William & Gilbert Tennent

  5. Presbyterism • New Lights • Old Lights • Methodists • Baptists Schism

Creation of new Bible colleges to teach both Old and New Light beliefs • Increased the need for religious tolerance • Encouraged people to use their personal judgement • Increased missionary work among African slaves, Indians and backcountry folk • Unification of many Americans to a common understanding of the Christian faith Lasting Impact
