  2. Sample Survey • How often do you wash your hands a day? • Population: 500 random adults out of Wal-Mart 5 sampling methods: • Simple – Ask at random (Ask 500 random people coming out of wal-mart) • Strat– Male or Female (Ask 250 females and 250 males, or all males, or all females) • Cluster – Age based brackets (18-22, 23-34, 35-47, 48-59, 60-72, 72+) • Systematic – Every 4th person out of Wal-Mart with groceries • Multiple – Every 4th male or female out of Wal-Mart between ages 18 – 30, with groceries • Which is best? • Simple Random, to prevent a biased answer due to not needing to group, or ask certain people, or races.

  3. Observational Study • How many people would report a person shop-lifting from a store? • Population: Out of 25 shoppers who would report the incident or say something about the person shop-lifting. • Retrospective: Look back at crime reports for that area, or store • Prospective: Pick 5 subjects and follow their crime reportings over5 years • 2 ways subjects will be randomized: • Question 25 people leaving the check out register • First 25 people in the store to see the incident, and see who reports it or not.

  4. Experiment • Does different alcohol types have a different effect on different mood swings? • Treatments: • Group 1 – No Alcohol (Placebo) • Group 2 – Type A Alcohol (Beer/Ale) • Group 3 – Type B Alcohol (Wine) • Group 4 – Type C Alcohol (Rum) • Single Blinded study, because the moods will need to be analysised and compared with the alcohol types. • Control would be Group 1 with No Alcohol, the placebo sugar water. To anaylsis the actual mood

  5. Experiment • 2 ways subjects will be randomized: • Each person draws a number 1 through 4, and the number drawn will determine the group assigned to, based on the number. • Each person is given a colored glass assigned to a certain group based on the glass color they have received.
