  1. Extending the Human Lifespan SEITA, ERIC, DOMINIC,GAVIN, CARMEN

  2. Define:Aging Aging; The process of growing old, failure of replacement of cells in sufficient number to maintain full functional capacity; particularly affects cells

  3. Human Lifespan Average Human Longevity; • Ancient Greece -30s • Medieval Britain -40s • Early 20ths -45s • Modern Times -70s • Future? -200? ∞?

  4. IMMORTALITY

  5. Ethical Questions Who deserves it? • Rich? • Smart? • Famous? Religion? Purpose of Life?

  6. Methods • Medicine / Lifestyle changes • Nanotechnology • Caloric Restriction • Cloning/Body part replacement • Genetic modification • Robotic integration • Mind Uploading • Young Blood

  7. 2045 Initiative • 1. Aims to surgically “transplant” human mind into robot body • 2. Create a new body with a brain-machine interface to allow control and a human brain life support system so the brain can survive without the body • 3. Create a computer environment into which human minds can be uploaded • 4. Lastly, upload human minds into holographic bodies (2045.com) Founder of the “2045 Initiative”: Dmitry Itskov

  8. Blood Transfusion From Young to Old • The blood of young mice appears to reverse some of the effects of aging when put into the circulatory systems of elderly mice • After combining the blood of an old and a young mouse, researchers found in 4 weeks stem cells in the older mouse’s muscle and brain got a boost of activity and were better able to produce neurons and muscle tissue • Growth Differentiation Factor 11(GDF11)

  9. Advantages • Curing “degenerative diseases” (Alzheimer's, diabetes, arthritis, etc.) • Much healthier general population (less medical expenses, more healthcare available) • “Wiser Mankind” (Einstein still alive) • Aging populations less prone to war/criminality • Increase in environmental protection (more at stake) • Other technological advances (agriculture, use of space)

  10. Disadvantages There are questions to immortality, like what are the disadvantages? One of these questions is important and the questions is, Will we keep on again as our lifespan is extended. this could be a possibility and could just be extending our deaths than our lives. Another disadvantages is staying in a loveless marriage. Imagine being married to the same person, but you don’t love them anymore, yet you continue to stay in that marriage, just divorce already! Another is that if we were to extend life then the retirement for everyone would be pushed back because if we were to retiree at age 60 then we would be living a long life of retirement because we won’t be able to to die until the age of 150 or something. if we were to live longer then the retirement age must be pushed back to probably age 90 maybe

  11. Conclusion • Average lifespan is significantly longer than that of humans 100 years ago. • Many movements taking place in hopes of extending the human lifespan even further. • Healthier lifestyles: regular exercise, balanced diet and not smoking >> Longer Life • Countless products to counteract the effects of aging: hair dye, anti aging cream, face-lifts, etc... • What exactly makes you "human", and when will that barrier be breached? With these up & coming technologies you have to take into consideration all the possible consequences and side effects. • Or can’t it be just enough to accept the average human lifespan and death?
