  1. Video Embedding

  2. Codecs Codec – program to encode/decode stream Common lossy codecs for video: WMV (Windows Media Video) / VC-1 (subset of WMV) Windows based, supported by College of Engineering streaming Can be played on many devices Good compression H.264/MPEG-4 Excellent compression Not supported by College of Engineering streaming Excellent compatibility among devices including phones/ipad/etc. Used in HTML5 standard for video Flash
  3. Bandwidth Considerations Must take into account the bandwidth of the viewer Significant buffering can occur if video requires too much bandwidth Example: Video compression – 512 kbps Audio compression – 100 kpbs Total Video bandwidth – 612 kbps Would stream okay over DSL / cable / etc. Many times your video editing software will provide total video bandwidth requirements.
  4. Displaying VideoNon-streaming Example: http://www.whatgoddid.info/ Does not use a streaming server Waits until enough of video has buffered before playing Uses H.264 encoding Viewable on many devices including iPhone/iPad/etc Not recommended or supported by the College. Takes up limited space on web server.
  5. Display VideoStreaming Example: http://www.bioe.psu.edu/video/ Can use Silverlight and WMV (Windows technologies) Supported by College and can use streaming server which has more space available Can create using Windows Movie Maker (free) and/or Microsoft Expression Encoder (free)
  6. Microsoft Video Software Windows Movie Maker – Comes as a part of Windows XP Windows Live Movie Maker – Free download from Windows Update (Win XP / Vista / 7) Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 – Free download available from http://www.microsoft.com/expression/try-it/
