  4. Rome Tolerates Diversity • Different religions • Cult of Isis • Offered women equal status with men • Persian god Mithras • Good over evil and life after death • Generally, Rome allowed the worship of other gods

  5. Divisions Arise is Judea • 63 B.C. Rome conquered Judea • Most Jews lived in Judea • Jews were split on whether to support Rome’s rule or not • Many started a revolt, believing a messiah was on his way, to help lead them to freedom

  6. A Jewish Rebellion Is Defeated • Rebellion was met with crushing force • Roman leveled Jerusalem • Jews moved from Judea • Rabbis preserved Jewish laws

  7. Jesus Begins Preaching • Born about 4 B.C. • Descendant of King David of Israel • Mother Mary • Grew up in Nazareth • Followed Jewish law • Started preaching to those around him, recruited 12 disciples to help him in his mission • apostles

  8. Jesus Teaches New Beliefs • Jesus believed in one God • Accepted the 10 Commandments • Rooted in Jewish law • Many believed he was the messiah • Emphasized forgiveness

  9. Condemned to Death • Jesus traveled to Jerusalem during the time of Passover • Exodus from Egypt • Romans feared he would inflame those eager to end Roman rule • Arrested by the Romans • Crucifixion
