  1. Lesson objective • The aim of this lesson is to use an episode of Family Guy to decide whether the media can treat issues of life and death fairly.

  2. Lesson outcomes • GRADE B - will be able to decide whether the media should be allowed to criticise religion or not. • GRADE A - will be able to assess the coverage of abortion in the Family Guy episode

  3. What should the media do about issues of life and death? • You are going to be given a sheet which contains reasons why some people think the media should not criticise what religion says about issues in life. • Follow the instructions on the sheet then use the statements to complete Q1 on p23 of your exam workbook. • Do this question in your book if you don’t like how the workbook has set it out.

  5. This episode was produced in 2010 but the Fox network in the US refused to show it because it dealt with the subject of abortion. • It was broadcast in the UK on 20th June 2010. • It was later released on DVD in the US but has never been shown on Fox.

  6. This is the task you will be given… • Explain briefly what happened in the episode (two sentences) • Do you think the episode dealt with the issue of abortion fairly? (was it balanced, was the view of the programme makers clear, did it make fun of the issue?) • Do you think programmes like Family Guy should be allowed to deal with issues like abortion or euthanasia?
