FY09 Funding Resource/Tasks • AFWA (February 2009 - January 2010): • 3.3.1 GSI code management and support (1.1FTE) • Deliverable: • Code management plan • Community (and AFWA) support • Maryland collaboration (in-house DTC staff) • 3.3.2 Testing and evaluation of GSI DA system in AFWA regional applications (1.4FTE) • Deliverable: Baseline testing • NODA vs WRF-ARW plus GSI • Cycling schemes: full vs limited cycling • NOAA (October 2008 - September 2009): • General GSI community support (0.5FTE) • Deliverable: GSI release in September 2009

  6. Community Release • GSI v1.0 was released on September 25, 2009: • GSI code (based on NOAA/NCEP Q1FY09) • Compilation/configuration tool • GSI required libraries • Updated GSI User’s Guide • Tested on IBM Supercomputer, Linux workstation, Linux Clusters

FY10 Plan • Continue collaborations and coordination with NCEP/EMC, NOAA/GSD, AFWA and NCAR. • Maryland staff • EMC visit Boulder • Maintain Boulder Community Repository • Update, port and enhance Regression Test Suite • Improve the portability of the code • Carry out weekly regression tests • Sync with EMC GSI repository (EMC->Boulder) • Plan for Boulder->EMC syncing • Develop community tools: PrepBUFR converter • GSI community support and management • GSI Community code release v2.0: April, 2010 (Tentative) • GSI Tutorial in June 28 – 30, 2010 in Boulder, CO • Form a Boulder GSI committee, which provides guidance to the GSI support, testing and evaluation • Maintain and update the Boulder Community GSI Code Management Plan • Setup administrative (?) structure for GSI management • Coordinate T&E activities • Update GSI User’s Guide v2.0 • Provide support to the community including GSI-help, GSI webpage, online documentation and online tutorial • Present Boulder GSI work at national and international conferences

FY10 Plan • GSI T & E DTC will • Set up the FY2010 AFWA GSI Testbed, based on the recommendation from the DTC FY2009 GSI T&E report; • Carry out a baseline experiment without GSI (NODA run) using the latest WPS and ARW, available in Spring 2010, as a reference for evaluating GSI experiments; • Test and evaluate the latest GSI, available in Spring 2010, using the testbed; • Conduct impact studies to assess impact from certain data types; • Check and test QC procedures; • Deliver a report to AFWA summarizing the test results and recommendations. • Further develop the end-to-end scripts; • Develop utilities to read and display outputs from GSI, WRF and MET

FY10 Plan • Extra tasks (1.0-1.5 FTE) • Development community tools (samples) to read GSI and display outputs (e.g., GSI’s binary outputs). • DTC GSI Testbed • Expand the AFWA GSI Testbed: • Compute a new (ARW) BE from NODA, carry out singe ob experiments and perform initial BE tuning, in collaboration with MMM colleagues; • Test and evaluate the ARW BE (and its tuning) using the testbed, in collaboration with MMM colleagues; • Develop utilities to read and display outputs from GSI, WRF and MET; • provide documentation of the utilities to AFWA. • Set up a GSD GSI Testbed: • test GSI capability/configuration for RR also using WRF-ARW • initial capability – impact for cloud analysis using GOES and METAR observations • extendable to observation impact for other platforms by DTC community
