  3. Kagan Structures • Kagan Structures produce revolutionary positive results. Teachers, schools, and districts now use Kagan Structures to increase academic achievement, improve ethnic relations, enhance self-esteem, create a more harmonious classroom climate, reduce discipline problems, and develop students' social skills and character virtues. • When students are engaged, they pay attention, they're motivated, they learn more, and the learning sticks. The biggest difference between the Kagan approach and teaching using traditional methods is the ability to engage every student. • The more they interact with their peers and with the curriculum, the more they'll learn. Kagan Structures require every student to participate frequently and approximately equally.

A DAY AT SCHOOL SOME EXAMPLES Community circle – news, opinions, reading, games, tell a story, add a word etc. Stretching, line in order according to birthdays, height, form letters, make shapes Learning is structured and creative. Brainstorm together • Community circle (3 times a week) • Energizers • Group work • Team building • Paired learning • Class building • Individual work

  7. HOMEWORK Will be posted on the website but the children must not rely on it. They are responsible to write their own homework every day. The website can work as a back up so that you may check what has been assigned. TESTS QUIZZES AND GRADES Tests in all subjects after each concept has been taught. You will be notified a week in advance. Sometimes there will be quizzes without prior warning based on the day’s lesson and after the appropriate drilling in class. Grades are based on class participation, effort, homework completion, enthusiasm, presentation of work, class projects, tests and quizzes.

  8. NUMBERED HEADS TOGETHER We will use a software game called Numbered Heads Together to revise lessons. This ensures total participation. Everyone gets a turn. Excellent for revision. Tablets mean that everyone must answer and be involved instead of the same children putting up their hands. LESSONS Textbooks will mostly stay at school and homework will be from worksheets/booklets, the tablet, internet links and the website. Please buy the appropriate file for each subject. We must all try to make the children’s bags lighter by sorting out the files regularly. Our aim is for the children to learn from class.

  9. MATHS We will use the Abacus books in class and worksheets/study ladder/maths links/abacus website and the class website at home. Mental maths Extra practice for homework on the class website Marking – the children will mark their own work either individually or in teams. I will mark their tests and quizzes and check their work by moving around the classroom. Revision worksheets will be given prior to tests. Studyladder.com tasks will be assigned. The completion of these tasks ensures a better performance in Maths.

  10. OXFORD ENGLISH Book and ex. Book mostly at school. Extra practice appropriate to their level will be posted on weblinks on our website. Strategies and techniques will be practiced throughout the year. Test at the end of each unit. We will also cover part of OXFORD ENGLISH BOOK 4 this year. COMPOSITION Composition skills will gradually be built on. We will start from expanding sentences, writing a good sentence, then a paragraph and then a composition. Clear guidance will be given on different types of composition. Written in class. Must be completed within the given time. Must follow the structure and suggestions given. Comments and suggestions written in margins. Exercise book will be sent home once or twice during each term for parents to sign.

  11. SPELLING • The emphasis will be on how they can become masters of their own learning. • Look, read/say, cover, write, check. • We will do this in class. They must learn the word to use it in a sentence and for writing and not for lists. • Their ability to use the spelling words in composition will be the true indicator that they have learnt the words. GRAMMAR The Grammar lessons are within the OXFORD ENGLISH BOOK. The children can practice on line as there are numberless sites. The best ones will be posted on English weblinks on our website. I suggest you use these as I check them out before I assign them.

  12. READING • The class reader ‘Christian the Lion’ will be read around the class. There will also be activities and worksheets. • Sometimes we will act some parts or I will engage them in the ‘hot seat’ role playing activity. Try this at home. • Reading scheme – the aim is to reach stage 13. Read for understanding. • Library books – enjoy reading. • I will read several books to them during the year. They must use their imagination to make pictures and they must listen carefully. On certain occasions they will have to write a book report.

  13. Art – during the year we will try to use various mediums of art from clay, to water colours, pastels, collage, patterns, painting e.tc. The use of various materials enables children to create individual art and to learn about different artists.   14. HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY/SCIENCE • BOOK, BOOKLETS AND WORKSHEETS. • PROJECTS • SPECIAL FILES TO PUT WORKSHEETS NEATLY. • MARK IS BASED ON PARTICIPATION AND INTEREST, HOMEWORK, TESTS AND PROJECTS. THE STUDENTS MUST SHOW A CLEAR KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROJECT CONTENT. • QUIZZES BASED ON DAILY LESSONS • Once the children have signed into Office 365 I will be able to share the history book with them. At the moment we are making copies.

REPORTS, VISITING HOUR, GETTING AND STAYING IN TOUCH • MID TERM PROGRESS WILL BE DISCUSSED DURING A SPECIFIED MEETING IN THE AFTERNOON. • YOU MAY COME TO SEE ME DURING VISITING HOURS On Monday between 11:00 and 11:35. You can also call me at school during this time if you are unable to come. • Write me an email to see how your child is getting on or to discuss any concerns. • Please keep in touch throughout the year and don’t just leave it for report times which are twice a year and two mid term progress meetings.

CLASS DOJO • THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR I AM USING THIS NEW METHOD OF CLASS DISCIPLINE, ENCOURAGING GOOD BEHAVIOUR BUT AT THE SAME TIME KEEPING IN TOUCH WITH THE PARENTS. • EACH CHILD MUST AIM HIGH FOR HIMSELF/HERSELF. IT IS NOT A COMPETITION AS THE POINTS DO NOT SHOW ON THE BOARD. • PLEASE PRAISE YOUR CHILD FOR ANY POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR AND HELP YOUR CHILD IN THE EVENT OF A REMARK THAT YOUR CHILD NEEDS WORK IN A CERTAIN AREA.
