According to the 2006 Monitoring the Future study, prescription drug use among teenagers ranks just below marijuana use, with significant use noted in those as young as 12 and 13. Every day, around 2,500 teens experiment with pain relievers for the first time. As the aging Baby Boomer generation continues to increase their medication intake for chronic issues, they also become prone to misusing narcotic painkillers and sleep aids. The rise in opiate prescriptions by 154% from 1992 to 2002 highlights an urgent need for awareness and prevention strategies.
