Act 3:- November 1911 Eva and Eric Birling. Eric Birling met Eva Smith in the Palace bar in November 1911. Eva had been persuaded to go there by some friends. When she met Eric she had not eaten all day. Eric gives no reason why Eva was persuaded to go there.

  1. Act 3:- November 1911 Eva and Eric Birling Eric Birling met Eva Smith in the Palace bar in November 1911. Eva had been persuaded to go there by some friends. When she met Eric she had not eaten all day. Eric gives no reason why Eva was persuaded to go there. His relationship with her was as follows:- i. He was drunk the first night, as was Eva. I’d been there an hour or so with two or three chaps. I was a bit squiffy P. 51

  2. Act 3:- November 1911 Eva and Eric Birling ii. He took her home and threatened to make a scene until he was let in. Eric:-I threatened to make a row. Inspector:-So she let you in? Eric:-And that’s when it happened. And I don’t even remember. P. 51/52 iii. He saw her a number of times later. iv. Eva informs him that she is pregnant. v. Eva refuses to marry him. She says he is too immature.

  3. Act 3:- November 1911 Eva and Eric Birling She didn’t want me to marry her. Said I didn’t love her - and all that. In a way, she treated me - as if I were a kid. Though I was nearly as old as she was. P. 53 vi. Eric insists he gives her money. vii. Eric has to steal the money because he cannot approach his father about the problem. Mr. Birling:-Why didn’t you come to see me when you found yourself in this mess? Eric:- Because you’re not the kind of a father a chap could go to when he’s in trouble - that’s why. P. 54

  4. Act 3:- November 1911 Eva and Eric Birling vii. She accepts until she realises that it is stolen. viii. She refuses to see him again. Inspector:-The girl discovered that this money you were giving her was stolen, didn’t she? Eric:- Yes. That was the worst of all. She wouldn’t take any more, and she didn’t want to see me again. P. 54 It is after that point that Eva applies to Brumley Women’s Charity Organisation.
