  1. Development of a High Resolution Modeling Capability OAD Campaign Plan 3 December 2007

  2. Desired End State • The capability to conduct high resolution modeling of infantry operations is organic to the Operations Analysis Division • The Division can evaluate tactics, equipment, operating concepts, C2 structures, as they affect the individual Marine • Analysts may consider MOE/MOP associated with physiological and cognitive loads

  3. Roadmap • Stand-up High-Res interest group (Nov 07) • Assess state of the art (Dec 07-Feb 08) • Identify needed changes (Feb-Apr 08) • Distributed Operations Study (Jan-Jul 08) • Learn Pythagoras/MANA/Data Farming • Develop OAD_HIGH-RES v1.0 (Mar-Dec 08)

  4. High-Resolution Modeling Interest Group (HRIG) • Initiated small scale effort in late November • Conducting research on use of ABM for analysis; many examples from NPS, WinterSim, IDFW • The idea of using ABM is well established in the Analysis Branch; now need to explore issues of ownership, configuration management and areas of application • Primary method to develop set of requirements for OAD_HIGH-RES v1.0

  5. Distributed Operations Study • Dec ’07: draft study request prepared • Tailored to support on-going capabilities based assessment underway in FMID • Looking at phase changes in DO (e.g., the max spread between DO elements in Scenario X is?) • Tool to use: Pythagoras • Mature application, familiar to AB • Analysis to be done in house: first step on the learning curve • Possible adjuncts: • MANA: identify emergent trends in the scenario, then dive into details of vignette • SEED (http://harvest.nps.edu): efficient DOE and data farming

  6. Develop OAD_HIGH-RES v1.0 • To minimize risk, will consider data-driven alternatives to code changes (e.g., STORM demonstration) • Delivered solution will have full set of functionality: • High resolution ABM, tailored to OAD needs • NOLH algorithm for DOE • Options for executing the required number of replications (typically a very large number) • Tools for data analysis and display
