  1. Creating a Sustainable Creative Future for Yourself: Exploring Unique Ways YOU can create new value for yourself and others Welcome to the VAPA Creative Entrepreneurship Mashup #1

  2. Welcome & Self Introductions

  3. Realities for artists in the 21st century • Job opportunities are in short supply! • Traditional arts career pathways won’t absorb all who are qualified. (They aren’t now!) • Artists need to create their own jobs, rather than hope to find existing ones. • Artists need to imagineer their own unique futures and livelihoods by identifying opportunities to create new value for others through new venture/enterprise creation. (This involves risk.) • The world’s need for artists and creative problem solvers has never been greater! • Working for yourself can be more rewarding than working for others.

  4. Artists in the 21st century must be entrepreneurs… … a personwho identifies, organizes, and managesanyenterprise (includinga business) usually with considerable innovation, initiative, and risk. (From the French, meaning “to undertake”) Entrepreneurs are creative, innovative “disrupters” who invent …or massively re-make… a new status quo.

  5. Many ways to define entrepreneurship… From students and associates at Babson College: “Improving yourself by improving the world and its people around you.” “The ability to solve problems using non-traditional approaches, innovation, calculated risk-taking, and perseverance to make an activity sustainable.” “Seeing the possibilities where others see only the obstacles, and having the relentless driveto transform those obstacles into opportunities for success.” “Grabbing a life passion by the horns and sculpting it into a real business that adds value to others' lives.” “Bringing your version of the world to life.”

  6. Figuring out yourWHY, HOW, and WHAT • Why do you make art? • How might your creative skills and talents generate new value for others …and yourself? • What is your strategy for generating new value for others and thus sustaining your creative self?

  7. It’s simple…

  8. What is value generation? Creating something that improves -- adds value to -- the lives of others and thus generates new value for YOU. (perhaps a new or improved product or service)

  9. How do I generate new value for others and myself? Transform challenges into opportunities!

  10. Where are there opportunities to generate value using your creative skills? Identify challenges, problems, or missed opportunities, then… Think about how you and your unique skillset(s) might provide the solution or fill the gap!

  11. What’s in it for me? The “reward/payoff” for generating new “value” may come from… • A customer/consumer (locally, nationally, or internationally, via the web) • A Foundation, Government entity, or non-government organization (NGO) (especially in the case of social entrepreneurship) • An “angel investor” or “VC” (venture capitalist) …and will always include deep personal satisfaction!

  12. Just a few possible opportunities for artists like YOU… • The world’s aging population (those over 60 will double by 2050) (Is there an opportunity here for artists?) • Gang problems/crime (Is there an artistic/creative solution?) • Sustainability, both economic and environmental (How might the arts be part of the solution?) • Engagement in traditional live arts events by 18-24 year-olds and college-educated adults is declining! (How might one deliver/make art in new, unusual ways and in non-traditional environments, to engage new, larger, younger audiences?)

  13. Preparing for the next mashupThink about your world…and your place in it… • Myers Briggs Personality Test (Google it!)

  14. Next week – Mashup #2 How to realize your “why” and “what”: “Imagineer” a proposal for your OWN value-generating creative enterprise.
