  2. My 1st Year of School Kindergarten is a year of growing! You will see your child grow and develop socially, emotionally, physically, and intellectually. As a parent, you are your child’s first and most important teacher. There are many things that you, as parents, can do to help your child adjust easily and eagerly to their first school experience in Kindergarten.

  3. Kindergarten Readiness • Children will adjust quickly and get the maximum benefit from Kindergarten by being able to do the following skills independently.

  4. Tie shoes • Recite full name, address, and phone number • Put on and take off your coat all by yourself, fasten your coat, zip and unzip, hang up your coat neatly • Use tissue properly • Use the toilet properly and fasten your clothes Essential Skills

  5. Use Your Manners • Say “yes” and “no”, “please” and “thank you”, at the proper times. • Be quiet when someone else is talking. • Wait your turn • Share and play nicely with others • Respect the care of toys and materials. Put them away when you are done using them. • Listen to stories being read • Show respect for authority

  6. What to Work on With Your Child – Through Conversation • Talk to your child about things around you, what you are doing or where you are going. What do they notice? • Ask your child to point to pictures as you identify them. What do they see or observe? • Allow your child to see you reading and writing. Talk about it together. • Talk about your day together – What did you do today at work, home, or out & about? • Listen to your child and model good listening

What to Work on With Your Child – On the Go! • Point out letters, words and logos • Count objects – everywhere • At the store, let your child help with shopping, counting, reading, and using money • Point to numbers on signs, houses or in books, practice writing the numbers • Visit the Library together and choose books to look at, read together and listen to for enjoyment. • Play, “I Spy”!

  8. What to Work on With Your Child - Routinely • Help your child recognize and name numbers. • Help your child recognize and name basic shapes and colors. • Encourage your child to read and write. • Write, display and point out your child’s name often • Read aloud to your child every day!

Benefits of All Day Kindergarten • Full-day kindergarten students have more time and opportunity to play with language, explore subjects in depth, have a more flexible, individualized learning environment, and have more individual and small-group interactions with the teacher. • Full-day programming allows children more time in the school setting to interact socially with their peers and learn about each other. • Enrichment: Lunch, Recess, Extra-Curricular Activities, Phy. Ed., Music, Art, Latin & Technology • Increased achievement overall • All-Day students have an easier transition to 1st Grade

Benefits of Half-Day Kindergarten • Introduction to school is done in stages. • Child attends kindergarten at their optimal time of day. • A half day may be more conducive to learning with the shorter attention spans of young children. • Shorter period of time away from home may assist with “leaving home” issues. • Less fatigue, particularly at the very beginning of the year. • Structured time in short school day • No proven lasting academic disadvantages.
