  1. Baseline Report for the Aggregate and Concrete Industries in Europe ECO-SERVE Network, Cluster 3: Aggregate and Concrete Production Prepared by: Danish Technological Institute Icelandic Building Research Institute NCC Franzefoss ERGO Engineering Geology Ltd. (Hönnun)

  2. Aggregate production • Mainly quarried from natural sand and gravel resources, • Increasing amount from crushed rock and recycled material. • Aggregates are by far the most used material worldwide, second only to water: • 70% of concrete and mortar, • 90% of road pavements, • Facing an image problem; unwanted, but not unnecessary. • The biggest challenge will probably be to introduce resource management strategies to meet the environmental requirements while, at the same time, maintaining profitable day-to-day production, and even increase the level of industrialization. • Sustainability issues most pressing are: • Mineral resources, • Land use, • Mass balance & surplus materials, and • Energy consumption.

  3. Production of Aggregates in tonnes/capita in European Countries in the year 2000.

  4. Production of Aggregates (2001) – Percentage Distribution. (From: the European Mineral Statistics 1997–2001).

  5. Aggregates trade in 2001. (The European Mineral Statistics 1997–2001).
