GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS • The importance of information, co-ordination and networking of marine sciences and technology is considered paramount. • Encouraging networks among existing national and European marine research and technology institutions, programmes and activities is a fundamental instrument for a more cohesive and efficient European co-operation in marine and technology, especially in the framework of the implementation of a Marine European Research Area and the European Maritime Policy.   3. ABOUT CNR • CNR is the biggest public research structure in Italy. The scientific fields of the more than 100 Institutes cover a variety of issues from Humanities to Nanotechnology. • CNR’s mission: Perform, promote, broaden, transfer and improve research activities in the main development fields of knowledge for the scientific, technological, economic and social development of Italy. • 107 Institutes, located in about 300 different sites around the country; 11 Scientific Departments; 83 Research Projects; more than 4.000 Researchers.
